Notes about Adrianus Hermanus SCHOLTEN

Adrianus farmed land, but was highly literate. He was known to have a huge library, like some other Scholtens I know.
The archive shows that and that of professional activities in the address 26 Kerkhof (Churchstreet) included a cemetary and was also used as a bleechery. Later he was (also) gardener.
This property was owned from many years owned by the family Scholten. The register indicates that this establishment at 1832 was a bleechery with a yard with a total size of approximately 21 acres and 4 (2104 m2)) in the name of Gerrit Jan Scholten, born about 1795. It was then changes hands with the marriage of Gerrit Wissink and Klein Kraanenbarg Hendrika (widow of AH.Scholten - a son of GJScholten). It was then, in 1901, assets were assigned to pay debts and durring the time of the WWI, Wissink was forces to sell. Wissink arranged for the family to continue to live there, had he pid a small amount of rent.The rent of the house was only f 1.50 per week. Doctor Gerbrandy described it as an unhealthy house, with humid and very poor sanitary facilities ,including an outdoor toilet in "t Huuske".

Uit het archief blijkt, dat Gerrit bleker van beroep was en dat uitoefende op het adres Kerkhof 26 te Zutphen (de Bleek van Wissink) Later was hij (ook) tuinder.
Vermoedelijk was de Bleek al jaren eigendom van de familie Scholten. Bij de instelling van het kadaster in 1832 staat De Bleek (een huis met erf met een totale grootte van 21 are en 4 ca (2104 m2) ) op naam van Gerrit Jan Scholten, geboren omstreeks 1795. Het kwam vervolgens door het huwelijk van Gerrit Wissink (van
1827) en Hendrika Klein Kraanenbarg (weduwe van A.H..Scholten - een zoon van G.J.Scholten) in het bezit van de Wissinks. Het werd hen in 1901 uit de erfenis toegewezen,Uit het kadaster blijkt voorts, dat De Bleek in 1916 verkocht is aan de brandewijnstokerij Mispelblom. Het water moet opa Wissink wel erg aan de lippen hebben gestaan, dat hij genoodzaakt was huis en have midden
in de 1e wereldoorlog te verkopen. Kennelijk heeft hij bedongen er de rest van zijn leven te mogen blijven wonen. De huur van het huis bedroeg slechts f 1,50 per week. Dokter Gerbrandy schijnt na de oorlog eens aangegeven te hebben, dat het een ongezonde woning was: vochtig en met zeer gebrekkig sanitair (o.a. een w.c. buiten in " ’t huuske" en daar was geen spoeling en deponeerde men zijn behoefte in een tonnetje, dat dan op zijn beurt regelmatig geleegd moest worden).
Alles bij elkaar was armoede er kennelijk troef.
