Jan is geboren aan de Rademarkt en gedoopt op zondag 9 juli 1752 in de A-kerk in Groningen. Zijn ouders zijn vermeld als Jurjen Jans en Annigje Jurjens; in de overlijdensakte wordt vermeld dat de vader Jurjen Jans Voorsmit en de moeder Annigje Wolvendijjk zijn.
In het Ondertrouwboek Groningen 1769-1776, folio 190 v staat op zaterdag 19 februari 1774 het voorgenomen huwelijk geregistreerd van Jan Jurjens Voorsmid, van Groningen, grenadier in de compagnie en eerste Bataillon van de generaal Lewe, met Henrica van Dam, van Groningen; waarvoor Cornelius Foekens (Fockens) als halfbroeder haar registratie verzorgt. Op dinsdag 15 maart 1774 wordt het huwelijk gesloten door ds Lubbers in de Martinikerk in Groningen.
Jan Jurjens is in militaire dienst en verblijft onder meer in Groningen, in Coevorden waar hij corporaal is, in Sluis (Zeeland) en later weer in Groningen. In latere akten wordt vermeld dat hij sergeant en gepensioneerd sergeant is.
