Notes about Petrus Maria "Piet" van Besouw

Petrus Maria van Besouw, fabrikant en raadslid te Goirle, werd aldaar geboren op 30 juni 1868. Hij overleed te Hilversum op 22 januari 1949 als weduwnaar van Agatha C.A. Pluym. Zijn ouders waren Gerard van Besouw en Johanna van de Lisdonk. Aanvankelijk ging Piet na de lagere schooltijd naar het klein seminarie te St. Michielsgestel, maar na zijn terugkeer, kwam hij terecht in de textielfabriek van zijn vader. Samen met broer Jan werd hij in 1894 vennoot van dit bedrijf. Na zijn huwelijk in 1892 ging hij wonen in het huis van zijn overleden(aangetrouwde) oom, Piet van Gorp(xCatharina van de Lisdonk) , gemeentesecretaris van Goirle. Rond 1895 betrok hij een nieuwe villa aan de Kerkstraat in Goirle, welke, naar de vrouw van Piet, de naam huize Agatha kreeg. Naast het vennootschap in de firma Van Besouw, handelde Piet ook in garens onder de firmanaam Van Besouw-Pluym. Na de stakingen in Goirle in het begin van de 20e eeuw werd de verhouding van Piet met zijn broer Jan steeds slechter. In 1916 leek het erop dat Piet Goirle zou gaan verlaten, omdat hij in Limburg betrokken raakte bij een experiment, waarbij een aantal personen, waaronder priester Poels, een spinnerij wilden oprichten. Doel was de Limburgse meisjes die in Duitsland gingen werken thuis te houden. Dit ging niet door; in 1917 trad Piet uit de firma Van Besouw en richtte met zijn zonen de firma P. van Besouw & Zn. op. Tevens werd de handelsmaatschappij P. van Besouw & Zn. opgericht met het doel om handel te drijven in grondstoffen en eindproducten. Door een rechtszaak en het faillissement van de Hanzebank in 1921 kwam er een einde aan de activiteiten van Piet van Besouw in Goirle. Zijn fabriek aan de Parallelweg kwam in handen van de familie Broekhoven uit Nijmegen, die er de N.V. Hollandse textielindustrie in vestigde.
