Notes about Bernardus van de Lisdonk

Bernardus van de Lisdonk, te Goirle geboren op 23 maart 1843, stierf daar ongehuwd en zonder beroep op 7 augustus 1878. Te Gestel bij Eindhoven was Bemardus leerlooier en aldaar kocht hij van zijn moeder voor 2700 gulden twee huizen met erf en tuin. Een jaar later was hij haar nog 2952 gulden schuldig. In 1875 stond hij terecht voor het provinciaal gerechtshof, omdat hij op de openbare weg te Gestel burgemeester Egidius Henricus van Gennip van die gemeente had beledigd. Van Gennip verklaarde voor de rechtbank dat er herhaaldelijk baldadigheden werden gepleegd op zijn erf en dat hij daarom 's avonds zijn bezittingen bewaakte. Als Van de Lisdonk nadert over de klinkerweg vraagt de burgemeester hem: "Wat hebt gij te kort".
Daarop antwoordt Van de Lisdonk: "Gij zijt een ploert. een gemene vent, een smeerlap. een huichelaar, een schelm. ik verzeker u, dat ik u zal afslaan, of het iemand anders zal laten doen, dat afslaan kost maar 10 gulden". Van Gennip denkt dat de beklaagde hem niet kent en zegt: "Ik ben de burgemeester", waarop hij als antwoord krijgt: "Gij zijt een schelm, een boer, dat heb ik vandaag nog in het publiek gezegd". Van de Lisdonk werd veroordeeld tot de kosten van het geding en een boete van 20 gulden.
