Eykamp was born on Sept. 19, 1919, near Lake Preston to Will and Lillian (Reynolds) Eykamp. He attended rural elementary school and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1937. He farmed with his father until 1942, when he left for Washington to find work. There, he worked in a flour mill and then in the shipyards until he was drafted into the Army. He served during World War II. He was a company clerk. On Dec. 7, 1945, he returned to the family farm and also did custom farming. He married Marjorie Knight on Feb. 5, 1947, at Oldham, where they moved in 1950. He farmed and continued to do custom farming. He started cleaning seed and in 1975 he built Green Thumb Commodities, now a worldwide seed-cleaning business. He worked full-time until May 2006, when he entered Kingsbury Memorial Manor in Lake Preston due to Parkinson's disease.

He was a member of the South Dakota, Northern, Southern and American Seed Trade associations; the American Legion, Oldham City Council, fire department and Oldham school board.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Oldham; two sons, David (Susan) and Jim (Jean), both of Oldham; two daughters, Linda Watson of San Diego, Calif., and Pam Libby of Madison; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roy of Australia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a grandson.
