"Forrest [10th] spent from November 1944 to June 1946 in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Trenton, a light cruiser. Most of his time was spent in the Aleutian Islands area and after the war was over he completed his time in Shanghai, China.After the service he worked as a linotype operator for the Rochester Post Bulletin, Rochester, Minnesota, and the Oelwein Daily Register. He married Alberta Baker on December 4, 1988; they now reside in Oelwein."

Funeral servicesfor Forrest M. Heitland, 77, of Oelwein were held Wednesday, October 10 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein at 10:00 am.m Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiated. Inurnment was in the Olena Mound Cemetery in BuffaloCenter. Forrest passed away Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the Trinity Medical Center at Rock Island, Illinois from a sudden illness. Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Forrest Merle Heitland was born July 13, 1924 at Buffalo Center, son of George and Harmka (Pastern) Heitland. He married Alberta Mae Westendorf Baker on December 3, 1988 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. He was a newspaper printer formany years at Rolfe, Nevada, Rochester, Minnesota and at the Oelwein Daily Register in Oelwein. From 1978 until his retirement in 1987 he worked at United Farm Tools in Oelwein. After retirement he was also a crossing guard at ParksideSchool in Oelwein and also shuttled cars for Southern Cross Auto of Hazleton. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy.

Forrest is survived by his wife, Alberta, of Oelwein, two stepsons: Charles Baker and his wife, Susan, of Alliance, Nebraska; Steve Baker and his wife, Pat, of Helena, Alabama; three stepdaughters: Kathy Gordish and her husband, Matt, ofOelwein; Diane McCann and her husband, Matt, of Hazleton; Karla Vandersee, and her husband, Chris, of Weatherford, Oklahoma; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe Heitland, and his wife, Ruth, of BuffaloCenter. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Edward, Norman, Harold, Huxley and Alfred; four sisters: Grace, Margaret, Esther and Mildred."
