'Then Mildred [7th], the youngest daughter, married Lawrence Leibrand on October 16, 1944. They had no children. She spent her years before marriage working as a waitress at various places in Mason City. During her married life shespent much time in caring for her parents, any family member in need, or friends and neighbors. She was always there with a cheerful helping hand. She died on January 5, 1986 as a result of a two-car accident.'

"Mildred Leibrand Died Sunday From Accident Injuries

Mildred Ruth Leibrand, 67, of Thompson, formerly of Buffalo Center, died Sunday, January 5 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota from injuries suffered in a traffic accident which occurred Saturday afternoon, January 4 east ofThompson. Mrs. Leibrand and three others were injured in the accident.

Those hospitalized included Lawrence Henry Leibrand, 66, of Thompson; John R. Looft, 49, of Ledyard and his wife, Bernice Irene Looft, 46, also of Ledyard.

All of the injured were taken to the Forest City Hospital by the Thompson ambulance and rescue unit. Mrs. Leibrand was then transferred by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester and Mrs, Looft was transferred to the North IowaMedical Center in Mason City. Lawrence Leibrand and John Looft remained hospitalized at the Forest City hospital several days. Lawrence was dismissed Monday, January 6.

According to State Trooper David Hubbard, the accident occurred about 3:00 p.m. Saturday 2.8 miles east of Thompson on Highway 9. Lawrence Leibrand, accompanied by his wife, Mildred, was driving east as John Looft, accompanied by hiswife, Bernice, was driving west. The accident occurred as both vehicles entered an area of blowing snow in which there was zero visibility. The Looft vehicle crossed the center line, traveled into the eastbound lane and struck theLeibrand vehicle head-on.

According to the accident report, there was approximately $3,000 damage to the Leibrand 1981 two-door Volkswagen and $5,000 damage to the 1981 four door Chevrolet driven by Looft.

The accident, which was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, remains under investigation."

Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Thompson Friday, January 10 at 1:30 p.m. for Mrs. Mildred Leibrand, 67, of Thompson. Mrs. Leibrand died Sunday, January 5 at St, Mary's Hospital in Rochester of injuriessuffered.in a car accident Saturday.

Friends and relatives may meet with the family beginning at 3:00 p.m. Thursday January 9 at the Winter Funeral Home in Thompson.

The Rev. Harlan Stenberg will officiate at the funeral service Friday..Interment will be , in the Graceland .Cemetery in Buffalo Center with the W.inter Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be Leslie Leibrand, Jerry Alvey, Gregrory Heitland, James Heitland, Timothy Heitland and. Jeff Heitland. Mrs. Robert Roper will be the organist and Frank Myers, the soloist.

Mildred was born November 15,1918 in Buffalo Center to George and Harmka (Pastour) Heitland, Sr. She was married to Lawrence Leibrand on October. 16, 1944 at Forest City. She lived in the Buffalo Center, Thompson and Swea City area allher life and last worked, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Thompson.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence; three sisters, Grace. Smith of Rockwell, Margaret Rafferty of Austin, MN, and Esther Alvey of Thompson; five brothers, Joe, Alfred and Harold Heitland, all of Buffalo Center, Forrest Heitland ofOelwein and Huxley Heitland of Phoenix, AZ, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Norman and Ed." <>
