(Tory) for Richmond, 1780-84, and for Great Bedwyn, 1784-90; Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, 1780-1836; a Lord of the Treasury, 1783-89; he enrolled as a private in the City of London Light Horse at the time of the French Revolution; Vice-President of the Board of Trade, 1789-90, and P.C. 1 August 1789; Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire, 1790-93; Master of the Horse, 1790-95, and again 1807-21; joint Paymaster General 1791-1800; a Commissioner for Indian Affairs, 1791-1803; President Soc. Ant. [SCT] 1792-1813; K.T. 14 June 1793, which honour he resigned when in 1812, he was given the Garter; Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire, 1794 till his death; Lord justice General [SCT], 1795-1836; President of the Board of Trade and joint Postmaster General, 1804-06; LL.D. Glasgow, 1804; President of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, 1811-15; K.G. 31 March 1812; Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, 1813 till his death; Lord Chamberlain of the Household, 1821-27 and 1828-30. Captain General of the Royal Company of Scottish Archers, 1824-30.  He married, 1stly (special licence),
3 March 1785, at his father's house, Grosvenor Str., St. George, Hanover Square, Jemima Elizabeth, 1st daughter of  John (ASHBURNHAM), 2nd EARL OF ASHBURNHAM, by Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of John CROWLEY, of Barking, Suffolk.  She, who was born 1 January 1762, died in childbed, 18 September 1786, aged 24, in Grosvenor Square, and was buried at Aberuthven.  He married, 2ndly (special licence),
74 July 1790, at Kensington Palace, Caroline Maria, 1st daughter of George (MONTAGU), 4th DUKE OF MANCHESTER, by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James DASHWOOD, Baronet.  He died 30 December 1836, in Grosvenor Square, aged 81, and was buried at Aberuthven.  His widow, who was born 10 August 1770, and baptized at St. Marylebone, died at Petersham, Surrey, 24 March, and was buried there, 1 April 1847, aged 76.       [CP   9:157-8]
