Notes about Arnold Hertog van Gelre (1423-1472) van Egmond 10.1.1465 door zijn zoon Arnold afgezet.

Pretendent voor het hertogdom Gelre na de dood van Willem van Arkel (+1.12.1417).

(*nach dem 14.07.1410, †Grave 23.02.1473, beigesetzt in der St. Elisabethkirche zu Grave), folgte 25.06.1423 seinem Großonkel mütterlicherseits, Rainald IV., als Herzog von Geldern und Graf von Zutphen, wurde am 10.01.1465 von seinem Sohn gefangengenommen und abgesetzt [77]  <http://www.adel-genealogie.de/Genealogie.html>, 1471 durch Karl den Kühnen befreit, verpfändete am 7. Dezember 1472 sein Herzogtum für 300.000 rheinische Goldgulden an Karl den Kühnen. Arnold starb am 23. Februar 1473 zu Grave und wurde dort auch begraben. Er heiratete in Kleve am 23.Juli 1423 Katharina [78]  <http://www.adel-genealogie.de/Genealogie.html>von Kleve (*25.05.1417, †Lobith 10.02.1479, begraben im Karthäuserkloster zu Grave), Tochter von Herzog Adolf I. von Kleve (1373-1448) und dessen zweiter Ehefrau Maria von Burgund (ca. 1389-30.10.1463).

Sohn des Grafen Johann II. von Egmont und der Marie von Arkel, Tochter von Graf Johann XII.; Großneffe des Herzogs Rainald IV.
Arnold wurde 1423 durch die Landstände von Geldern, die hier am stärksten im gesamten Nieder-Lothringen ausgeprägt waren, Herzog von Geldern-Zütphen und wurde 1424 von Kaiser SIGISMUND als Herzog von Geldern bestätigt. Adolf von Berg, der ebenfalls Ansprüche erhoben hatte, mußte nach erfolglosem Krieg verzichten. Obwohl 1444 die Schlacht gegen Jülich verloren ging, mußte er nur auf Jülich-Berg verzichten. Nach jahrelangen Bürgerkriegen mußte er 1441 den Ständen alle Privilegien und Mitspracherechte erneuern. 1425/30 griff er mit dem Vater in eine der vielen Utrechter Stiftsfehden gegen einen päpstlichen Kandidaten ein, wofür beide zeitweise gebannt und geächtet wurden. Er reiste 1450/52 ins Heilige Land und hatte weiter Streit mit den Ständen und rief zuletzt die Vermittlung von Burgund an und provozierte damit ab 1459 neue verheerende Bürgerkriege gegen den Sohn. Durch eine Verschwörung, der auch sein Sohn und seine Gemahlin angehörten, wurde er 1465 gefangengenommen und auf Schloß Büren in harter Haft gehalten. Karl der Kühne von Burgund zwang Adolf  zur Freilassung seines Vaters und setzte ihn 1471 gefangen, worauf Arnold das Herzogtum für 92.000 Goldgulden an Karl den Kühnen verkaufte.

Hertog van Gelre en graaf van Zutfen (25 jun 1423-1465 en 1471-1473) als opvolger van oudoom Reinald IV; graaf van Kessel en graaf van Egmond.
Hij kwam in conflict met keizer Sigismund en raakte door de vele moeilijkheden zeer in de schuld; in 1450-1452 ondernam hij een reis naar Palestina.
Hij werd op 9 jan. 1465 door zijn zoon Adolf gevangen genomen in het slot Buren en later door Karel de Stoute bevrijd. Adolf doet op 19 nov. 1465 gedwongen afstand.
Hij verpandde op 7 dec 1472 zijn hertogdom voor 300.000 rijnse guldens aan Karel de Stoute.
