II.  2.  JOHN (MANNERS), DUKE OF RUTLAND, &c., 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, being 1st son by 3rd wife, born 18 and baptised 26 September 1676,     at Knipton, co. Leicester; styled (though erroneously) LORD Roos, 1679-1703 and MARQUESS OF GRANBY, 1703-10/1; M-P. (Whig) for Derbyshire, February to June 1701; for Leicestershire, December 1701-02; for Grantham, October 1705-10; for Leicestershire again, November 1710 to February 1710/1; a Commissioner for the Union with Scotland, 1706; Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, 1712-15, and of Leicestershire, 1714 till his death; nominated and invested K.G. 16 October and installed 9 December 1714.  He married, 1stly, 17 August 1693, Catherine (portion £15,000), sister of Wriothesley, 2nd DUKE OF BEDFORD, 2nd and youngest daughter of William RUSSELL, styled LORD RUSSELL (beheaded 21 July 1683), by Rachel, 2nd daughter and eventually coheir of Thomas (WRIOTHESLEY), 4th EARL OF SOUTHAMPTON. She, who was born 23 August 1676, died 30 October 1711, in childbed, at Southampton House, Bloomsbury,  aged 35, and was buried 10 November, at Bottesford.  He married, 2ndly, 1 January 1712/3, Lucy, sister of Bennet, 1st EARL OF HARBOROUGH, daughter of Bennet (SHERARD), 2nd BARON SHERARD OF LEITRIM [IRL], by Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of Sir Robert CHRISTOPHER, of Alford, co. Lincoln.  He died 22 February 1720/1, at Southampton House, of smallpox, aged 44, and was buried 9 March, at Bottesford.  His widow died 27 October 1751, aged 66, and was buried 7 November, at Bottesford.
