Crosses of St. Nicholas were erected in 1911 by Delancy Nicoll and Benjamin Nicoll, of New York, to commemorate their ancestor, Matthias Nicoll, who, as secretary of the Duke of York's expedition to America in 1664 and after the capture of New Amsterdam, became mayor of New York in 1671, Speaker of the first Colonial Assembly, writer of the Duke's Laws. He died 22 December 1687, and was buried at Manhasset, Long Island, U.S.A. [from inscription on cross].

    DELANCEY NICOLL, NOTED LAWYER, DIES;  Former District Attorney Is Stricken Suddenly in His 77th Year; Boodle Aldermen's Foe; Convicted Several for Accepting Franchise Bribes--Delegate to Constitutional Conclaves;
    DeLancey Nicoll, former District Attorney of New York County, who won fame as prosecutor of the so-called "boodle aldermen" died suddenly yesterday morning at his home, 23 East Thirty-Ninth Street, in his seventy-seventh year. He had been in apparently good health.  His son, DeLancey Nicoll, Jr., was with him at the end.
    (several paragraphs about his career)  Mr. Nicoll was born at Shelter Island, Long Island, on June 24, 1854, the son of Solomon Townsend and Charlotte Ann Nicoll. He attended St. Paul's School at Concord, N.H., and was graduated from Princeton in 1874 and from the Columbia Law School in 1876.  He immediately began the practice of law and opened his own office the next year. (more paragraphs about his career). Besides his son, he left two sisters, Mrs. William M. Hoes and Mrs. Thomas Fortune Ryan.  His wife, the former Maude Churchill, died in 1924.
