Een oorlogslogeetje uit Rotterdam die bij tante Nellie (Rijpma-IJsselmuiden) logeerde, was al eerder bij oom Lambert en tante Sien Rokebrand in Blaricum geweest. Via een zogenaamde Pyramide- of sneeuwbalbrief kwam Ety zo aan het adres van Aja van der Veer in Laren. Een leraar Nederlands vond dat zijn leerlingen brieven moesten schrijven. Zo is Ety gaan corresponderen met Aja. Na de oorlog zijn ze elkaar gaan opzoeken en zo heeft Ety Aja's oudste broer Grego,die toen in dienst was, ontmoet.
Grego werkte voor zijn diensttijd bij een houtzagerij in Laren. Na zijn diensttijd was hij chauffeur bij een aannemingsbedrijf uit Laren, voornamelijk in Zuid-Limburg. Na hun trouwen, burgelijk in Laren, waar Ety toen werkte bij de fam. Van Schaik, en kerkelijk in Joure, woonden zij korte tijd in Hoensbroek in wat wij nu een stacaravan noemen. Deze "salonwagen" is later naar Joure verhuisd waar Grego, na twee jaar bij D.E. gewerkt te hebben, bij zijn schoonvader Hendrik in dienst kwam. Later heeft Grego met Paul en Age de Libra van Heit overgenomen, tot dit bedrijf met de Friesland-Twente-Dienst van Henk en Pé samengevoegd werd tot de "Libra Vervoercentrale n.v.".
In 1974 werd dit bedrijf overgenomen door de S.B.S. uit Rotterdam. Voor dit bedrijf heeft Grego het kantoor Zwolle geleid. Het gezin Van der Veer verhuisde mee naar Zwolle, tot zij 1973 gedwongen werd te verhuizen naar de omgeving van Rotterdam, waar ze in Hoek van Holland terechtkwamen. Bij S.B.S. in Rotterdam was al gauw geen werk meer en moest er een overstap naar Uniterminal b.v. gemaakt worden, een Container Freight Station, waar Grego tot aan zijn VUT (1993) gewerkt heeft als toezichthouder administratie.
Ety heeft gewerkt als demonstratrice, controleuse en inpakster, en heeft thuis pension gehouden. Samen hebben ze veel gereisd, o.a. naar Spanje, Portugal, Amerika, Australië en Canada.
