Curtis Blumeyer, age 78, of rural Canby, MN passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 18, 2020 from 5 to 8 pm at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby. A private family service will be at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Private burial will be at the Marble Lutheran Cemetery, rural Canby.
Curtis Blumeyer was born on May 31, 1942 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Albertus and Anna (DeZeeuw) Blumeyer who moved their family to a farm south of Canby in 1952. He would fondly speak of his boyhood chores of caring for the chickens and the daily milking by hand of the cows. He was a graduate of the Canby High School class of 1960. After his education he was employed in the Minneapolis area by National Foods and traveled to grocers throughout the Minnesota, Wisconsin, and upper Michigan region.
He was united in marriage to Sandra Jean Hanson at Beldenville, Wisconsin on January 19, 1963. They moved their young family back to the rural Canby area where Curtis operated a dairy farm in Marble Township for many years. Beyond raising their four children, Curtis and Sandra were licensed foster parents and were also actively involved in guiding many youth as part of the county Extension 4-H program.
Curtis was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Town & Country Club of Porter, and a frequent supporter of many causes in the surrounding community. He was elected to a Lincoln County Commissioner seat from 2000 to 2014 where he played an integral part in legislation that expanded wind energy infrastructure for the southwest Minnesota area known as Buffalo Ridge. The hundreds of wind turbines now seen across the area's rolling hillsides are capable of producing a substantial amount of clean, renewable electricity for many years to come.
His interests and pastimes included bowling, camp-out bonfires, and visiting his children or extended family throughout the US. He enjoyed a vibrant social network including many adventures with his Marble Store Gang of close friends and neighbors. Curtis was an easy person to strike up a conversation with or to share a quick laugh and it could be said that nobody was a stranger to him even within a few moments of making his acquaintance.
Curtis is survived by three sons and a grandson: Todd (Archer) of Pahoa, HI, Chad of Minnetrista, MN, Trent of Canby and grandson Tyler, a college student at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, IN; two brothers: Arnold (Sharron) Blumeyer of Charleston, SC, Douglas Blumeyer of Rocky Point, NC; and two sisters: Patricia (Jeff) Heath of Bradenton, FL, Sandra (Orie) Beucler of Chanhassen, MN. He is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, brothers/sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Sandra; daughter, Stacey; his parents, Albertus and Anna; brothers, Arlin and Myron Blumeyer and one sister, Darlene Buffington.
Blessed be his eternal memory.
