Darlene Buffington of Mitchell lived in many communities and was involved in numerous activities and organizations throughout her life. Among her favorite things were working with horses and mules and traveling with her husband.
And she spent her last day doing what she loved as she died of a heart attack on Wed., Feb. 1, 2006 while on a mule ride with her husband at Grand Canyon, Ariz. She was 65 years old.
Funeral services were held Wed., Feb. 8 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Mitchell. Burial followed at the Augusta Cemetery in Marietta, Minn. Visitation was held Tuesday evening with Eastern Star services and a prayer service at the Bittner Chapel in Mitchell.
Darlene Ann Buffington was born Sept. 17, 1940, the fourth of eight children, at George, Iowa, to Albertus and Anna (DeZeeuw) Blumeyer. She moved to Canby, Minn., at an early age and graduated from Canby High School. She was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church.
She married Lee Buffington on June 13, 1959 at the Presbyterian Church in Canby, Minn. She worked in the Agriculture Department at SDSU in Brookings until 1962 and was then employed at the White Sands Missile Range in Las Cruces, N.M., until 1964 when she moved to Missoula, Mont.
She moved to Forsyth, Mont., in 1966 and Miles City, Mont., in 1968. She was a member of the Southeast Montana Cowbells, was a 4-H leader, a playground assistant and worked in a men's clothing store.
She moved to Wessington Springs in 1974 where she was a 4-H leader, worked at the Springs Creamery and was active in Eastern Star.
She was a member of the S.D. Sheep Growers Association Auxiliary and served as state chairman of the S.D. Make it Yourself with Wool Contest.
She attended Huron College and graduated with honors with a degree in Business Administration. She moved to Lemmon in 1985 and was employed at Kohlman, Bierschbach and Anderson.
She had been a resident of Mitchell since 1990 where she worked at Hanson Wheel and Wagon and Gerald Smith, CPA. She served as President of the Woonsocket Area China Painters, as state president of the S.D. Chapter of the World Organization of China Painters and was a quilt designer and piecer. She had been a member of the United church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church.
She especially enjoyed her 15 grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Lee; her parents, Albertus and Anna Blumeyer, Canby, Minn.; five children, Debra (Keith) Kraft, Mobridge; Randall (Merry Lou) Buffington, Casper, Wyo., Rhonda (Steven) Stryker, Gillette, Wyo., Charles (Rebecca) Buffington, Greensboro, N.C., Timothy (Elizabeth) Buffington, Ft. Collins, Colo.; 15 grandchildren, four brothers, Arlin (Kathryn) Blumeyer, Fargo, N.D., Arnold (sharron) Blumeyer, Charleston, S.C., Douglas (Sandra) Blumeyer, Rocky Point, N.C., Curtis Blumeyer, Canby, Minn.; two sisters, Patricia Lindahl, Minnetonka, Minn., and Sandra (Orrie) Beucler, Minneapolis, Minn.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Myron, a sister-in-law Sandra Blumeyer, one niece and one nephew.
A memorial fund has been established.
