Notes about Pietje Mendels

Pietje Bloemendal-Mendels wordt op 6 maart 1885 geboren in Lemsterland. Zij is de oudste dochter van Salomon Mendels (18 maart 1859, Lemmer) en Annechien Frank (28 oktober 1859, Meppel).
Na haar geboorte verhuist het gezin op 26 mei 1885 naar Amsterdam. Pietje heeft één jongere zuster Marianna (zie Marianna Roosnek-Mendels) die de oorlog niet overleeft. Ook twee van haar broers, Hartog (geb. 1890) en Emanuel (geb. 1891) komen om in Auschwitz.
Pietje trouwt op 10 augustus 1904 ten stadhuize van Amsterdam met Benjamin Bloemendal (08 augustus 1884, Groningen).Benjamin is pianist en speelt in café's.
Samen krijgen zij zeven kinderen. Allen worden geboren in Amsterdam. Serah (17 oktober 1905 ), Mozes (5 oktober 1909), Betje (1 juli 1916), Hartog (25 juni 1919), Marianne (22 januari 1920), Louis (2 mei 1922) en Francina (5 september 1923).
Het gezin Bloemendal is erg arm. Zij verhuizen ongeveer ieder jaar. De zeven kinderen worden ieder op een ander adres geboren.Benjamin sterft op 8 januari 1932 in Amsterdam. Pietje wordt dan depressief en suicidaal. De kinderen , voor zover nog thuis, gaan naar het joodse weeshuis.
Pietje gaat begin januari 1943 naar Gorinchem samen met haar dochter Marianne en duikt daar onder bij haar gemengd gehuwde dochter Betje. Daar worden zij verraden en opgepakt. Via Westerbork gaan zij naar Auschwitz en worden daar op 27 augustus direct na aankomst vergast.
