Dirkje Tuin overleed toen zij 15 was. In Wagenborgen (Groningen), ver weg van haar familie in Kortenhoef. Aangezien zich daar een grote inrichting voor zwakzinnigenzorg bevond, is mijn aanname dat Dirkje daar vanwege een ernstige handicap verbleef. Een paar weken eerder overleed op dezelfde plaats haar 18 jarige broer Hermanus.
