Notes about Hermanus van de Velden

Hermanus was fabrieks- en landarbeider maar ook tuinman en poelier. Als driejarig kind raakte hij bij het spelen met een theelichtje in brand, waarbij een van zijn handen zwaar werd gewond. Ofschoon dit zijn gehele leven een handicap was, heeft hij zich toch ijverig werkend door het leven heen geslagen. Wonend in Hilversum had hij toch zijn geboortedorp lief. Hij had er zijn volkstuintje op de kleiput vlakbij de Kanaalbrug. In die tijd had ik daar ook een tuin gehuurd en ik kan me hem nog goed herinneren als een vriendelijke man, die zeer goed kon tuinieren op de klei en altijd met veel opbrengst naar huis ging. Hij had zeer veel vrienden in Kortenhoef en met zijn humor wist hij velen op te beuren, tevens was hij het toppunt van hulpvaardigheid. Op oudere leeftijd was hij niet meer in staat te werken en werd hij invalide verklaard (bron: boek 'Vanaf De Grote Beer tot en met de familie Hagen' [schrijver Krijn Spaan - uitgever TONK]).
