Notes about Gerrit Jan Garritsen

Hij bezocht de openbare lagere school en werkte vervolgens bij zijn vader op de boerderij, eerst op Weltevreden, later op Melle.

Getuigen bij zijn huwelijk: Hendrik Monté, gemeentebode, 29 jaar; Hendrik Jan Rikkenberg, landbouwer, 48 jaar; Arie Dirk Ponger, koperslager, 39 jaar; en Aernoud Langeveld, beambte, 33 jaar.

Jan, zoals hij genoemd werd, was een bijzonder aardige, goede man. Hij heeft zijn kinderen opgevoed zonder ze ooit een klap te geven. Hij was wel streng, evenals zijn vrouw.

Hij was iemand van wie je op aan kon. Zoals alle Garritsen was hij dol op paarden. Hij deed mee aan concoursen.

Aanvankelijk pachtte hij hoeve Melle. Toen die in 1910 verkocht werd aan Zeeuwen moest hij er af.

Hij is toen vier jaar lang vracht- en passagierrijder geworden met één paard. Hij liet een paardenstal bouwen in de hoofdstraat van de Cocksdorp, dwars op de straat om maar één akker nodig te hebben en daar is toen nog, tevergeefs, tegen geprotesteerd. Het gebouw dient nu (1989) tot postkantoor. Het gezin zelf woonde in een glop ernaast.

Jans kleren waren vaak doornat. Die bracht hij dan naar zijn neef, bakker Buys, die de kleren in zijn oven droogde.

Vanaf 1914 huurde hij de hoeve Vianen van zijn vader. Eigenlijk wilde hij toen wel graag weg van Texel en hij heeft daarom nog een poging gedaan om de pacht van zijn oom Hein op Bid en Werk in de Haarlemmermeerpolder over te nemen, toen die ging rentenieren. Deze poging was tevergeefs; de eigenaar gaf de voorkeur aan een streekgenoot.

Jan kreeg al vrij jong reuma. Door deze ziekte werd hij nogal eigenaardig. Hij moest al vroeg veel aan zijn zoon Kees overlaten. Hierdoor heeft Kees van jongs af aan heel hard op de boerderij moeten meewerken. Zijn zuster kreeg een meer luxueuze opvoeding.

Toen Kees 20 jaar was deed hij al het werk op de boerderij.

In 1926 liep de huur van Vianen af. Jan zelf kon toen al niets meer en lag op bed. Jan kocht de boerderij uit de erfenis. Kees mocht hem huren als hij een flinke vrouw trouwde, wat hij in 1934 ook deed.

Jan ging in een burgerhuis op de Burgerkrocht in Den Burg wonen, wat hij zelf had laten bouwen. Hij stierf in dat huis. Lien verhuisde daarna naar een bovenhuis, waar zij is overleden.

Beiden zijn op het kerkhof in Den Burg begraven.
