Notes about Arie Garritsen
Hij doorliep de lagere school en werkte daarna bij zijn vader op de boerderij.op 16 okt. 1914 vertrok hij naar Den Helder om zijn broer Adriaan, die in de puree zat, te helpen. Arie deed het voorkomen of hij de baas was van Adriaans bedrijf en wist op die manier Adriaans 2e vrouw te bewegen zonder alimentatie te verdwijnen.
Binnen het jaar, op 18 apr. 1915, keerde hij terug naar Texel om zijn zieke broer Biem te helpen. Biem was een klein jaar tevoren getrouwd met Pietje Eelman. Pietje overleed in 1916 tgv. een niervergiftiging toen ze haar 1e kind verwachtte. Biem kreeg last van zijn rug en had steeds meer moeite zijn werk te doen.
Arie trouwde met Dieuwertje Bruin. Samen met zijn vrouw trok hij bij Biem in. Deze werd meer en meer invalide en moest daarom al het werk aan Arie overlaten. Arie en Duw verzorgden Biem tenslotte geheel tot zijn dood op Martha Hoeve op 13 sept. 1924.
Arie nam de boerderij over en wist de crisisjaren redelijk goed door te komen.
Duw was vlijtig en huiselijk. Ze leerde schapenboter karnen en werd verder ook een prima huisvrouw. Arie was vrolijk van aard en was overal graag gezien. Hij hield van gezelligheid in de goede zin. Hij was actief in het gemeenschapsleven en bekleedde veel bestuurlijke functies: in de aankoopcentrale, melkfabriek, Hollandse Mij. van Landbouw, polderbestuur, Ver. van Bedrijfsvoorlichting.
De Russenoorlog in april 1945 bracht veel te weeg. Arie en zijn gezin vluchtten met enkele buren met paard en wagen naar Oosterend, terwijl de granaten om de boerderij vielen. Een buurman zou proberen de koeien te melken. Na de Russenoorlog, die ca. 14 dagen duurde, vonden ze Martha Hoeve in desolate toestand terug, maar ze stond er nog, in tegenstelling tot vele andere boerderijen,
die afgebrand waren.
