Dirk and Alice's second child was named after Gerrit's grandfather. This was the grandfather for both Dirk and Alice, since they were first cousin's. This baby died at six weeks of age due to the croup, and also due to the fact that the Doctor, who lived six miles away and also attending another patient, was unable ot offer his assistance to the Scholten's.

    Their second child. Gerrit Martinus Scholten bornin 1888, was named for Dirk's father, born in 1888, was named for Alice's and Dirks grandfather. When he was six weeks old he became ill with the croup. The docotor lived six miles away, and when Grandpa went for him, he wasn't home. Gerrit died and is burried in Luctor. When my father was born less than a year later, on Friday, Dec 13, 1889, my grandmother wanted to name him Gerrit Benoni (Hebrew for "son of sorrow"), but my grandfather insisted on Gerrit Benjamin (Son of my Right Hand") Gerrit was later Anglicized to George. My father and and all his siblings except Uncle Bill were baptized by their father.
