Captain Warren Robert DeYoung, USN was born in Prairie View, Kansas on July 15, 1921 where he was raised by his father, Dick Albert and Ella Gertrude Walker DeYoung on a ranch. At the age of 17 Capt DeYoung graduated from Prairie View High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1939. DeYoung enlisted into the U.S. Naval Reserves in January of 1942 while attending Kansas University. He worked his way through college running a local cinema and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1943.
DeYoung was commissioned as an Ensign in the Reserves in September of that year. In 1944 DeYoung graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Midshipman's School, at which point World War II was in full swing. Ens. DeYoung chose to attend Patrol Torpedo Boot Training in Rhode Island and upon completion of PT Boat School he was assigned as the Skipper for PT 498 Ron 34. Serving in the European Theatre he and his crew operated out of Roseneath, Scotland crossing the English Channel the night before D-Day. In divisions of three, they escorted four groups of minesweepers in advance of the invasion fleet to clear a broad sea lane to the beaches and provide fire support to offshore targets. All of his crew returned safely. On January 1, 1945 DeYoung was appointed Lieutenant J.G. By September of 1945 he was on his way to Borneo where he Skippered PT 224 Ron 16, and he and his crew freed a prisoner of war camp.
When World War II ended, Lt. J.G. DeYoung transferred to the Supply Corp in Bayonne, New Jersey. February 19, 1947 he was commissioned as Assistant Paymaster, and June 18, 1948 he was transferred to N.A.S. Sangley Point, Philippines. In 1948 Warren married Margaret Milner, a young flight attendant he met on a blind date. January 1, 1949 DeYoung was appointed Lieutenant, Supply Corps. From 1953 to 1954 he was assigned to the U.S.S. Suisun Bay, nicknamed the Susy Q, serving in the Korean waters. DeYoung was stationed at North Island in San Diego, California in 1954 on Com Air Pac staff, where on July 1, 1954 was appointed Lieutenant Commander. On August 24, 1955 Warren and his wife welcomed a son, Peter Milner DeYoung while living in LaJolla, CA.
On February 1, 1957 Lt. Cmdr. DeYoung attended the United States Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and after graduation was assigned as the Supply Officer for the Naval Air Station in Naples, Italy. In 1958 Warren and Margaret welcomed a baby girl, Mary Ellen, into their lives. On April 1, 1959 DeYoung was appointed Commander. DeYoung completed his Masters degree in Business Management at George Washington University on June 5, 1963 while on assignment in Washington, DC.
In Washington he served at the Bureau of Naval Weapons as the Assistant Comptroller for Financial Systems and Operations. Cmdr. DeYoung was responsible for the installation of a new management system: Five Year Force Structure and Financial Program and the Program Change Control System, which completely revised the financial and accounting systems for the U.S. Navy. The summer of 1963 Cmdr. DeYoung moved to Bremerton, Washington. Here he was stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk which was undergoing a major overhaul and installation of sophisticated electronics that took eight and a half months. Deploying from Bremerton, Cmdr. DeYoung served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk in the Far East with the Seventh Fleet. Stationed out of Yokosuka, Japan the Kitty Hawk also toured Hawaii, the Philippines, and Hong Kong, and provided aerial support for the Vietnam War. Kitty Hawk returned to Bremerton on August 15, 1964. Cmdr. DeYoung received a letter of recognition by the US Navy for his services on the Kitty Hawk.
On October 1, 1964 DeYoung was appointed to the rank of Captain, Supply Corps and moved to San Diego, California where he served out his career at the Naval Air Station Miramar. Capt. DeYoung retired from the Navy on September 1, 1968 with 26 years of active service. After his navy career, Captain DeYoung worked as the Comptroller of General Atomic, for several years and then retired. Captain Warren R. DeYoung passed away on June 12, 1990 and is buried with his son and his wife at Dearborn Memorial Cemetery in Poway, California.
