Joseph Miller Sherren was born in Dorchester, Dorset, England. Joseph was baptized at the Durngate Street Independent Church in Dorchester on 2 June 1822. During his early years, Joseph was a gardener by trade. By his 30th birthday, in 1852, he decided he wanted more adventure in his life than just being a gardener so he left his mother, father, brothers and sisters behind and set sail for a new challenging experience in America, where there was talk of lots of land to own and new adventures. This voyage was taken during the time when it took them about 6 weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Now we can cross the Atlantic by plane in a matter of hours compared to weeks by sailing ship. While on the voyage, he became quite friendly with a lady named Jane Lincoln. She was travelling with her sisters also seeking new adventures in America. The sailing ship started from London, England and ended at New York City, U.S.A. where he was to meet his uncle. His uncle never showed up, so Joseph decided to travel with his new friend and her sisters over land to the state of Ohio, U.S.A. Jane lived with one of her sisters in the town of Hudson in Ohio, which is located near Cuyahoga and Portage Counties. It was said that a man called John Brown, the civil war abolitionist, also lived in this town and preached anti-slavery sermons a few years before his raid on Harpers Ferry in Virginia. Joseph also lived quite close to Jane because their friendship was becoming quite serious as he was courting her. Joseph and Jane's friendship later culminated in their marriage on 27 December 1854 according to their marriage certificate. Nine months later as a married couple, they decided to move on west and settled in Dubuque, Iowa, U.S.A. Joseph and Jane lived in Dubuque, Iowa for nine years when they decided to move again to the fertile land in Buchanan County, building a large farm situated near the town of Aurora. One item of interest noted about Joseph was that he drove a team of horses on the frozen Mississippi from Dubuque to St Paul, Minnesota. Also of interest, Jane was said to have worked for an English Squire who had the habit of leaving money around to see whether the hired help would be honest or not. This story has been handed down through the generations and told over and over again. It may not be history, but it is interesting. To this union of Joseph and Jane were born five children. After 16 beautiful years of wedded life, Joseph died from an unknown illness in September of 1866. He was 44 years old and is buried in the Fleming-Fremont Cemetery in Iowa.
