Notes about William White Sherren (Rev. & GGF)

According to the 1861 census, William White Sherren was a 33 year old independent Schoolmaster & Lay preacher. William later travelled the countryside of southern England as a minister, never settling down in one place for too long. William was preaching from a church in Lychett Minster in Dorset, when he decided to travel to Portland, Dorset in 1867. William got the debt on the Portland Chappel cleared off and a manse and schoolrooms were erected. The total cost was about 1600 pounds which was a lot of money in those days. He later resigned in August. During his long life, he married 4 times, and fathered 14 children. Eric, his youngest son, died very young and is buried with him. Christianna Brooker, the older sister of William's last wife, Alice, subsequently married William's son William Ernest, born of his second wife Jane Bradbury.

Sherren William White of Parsonage, Sunningdale, Berkshire died 5 June 1897 at Guy's Hospital, Surrey. Probate London to William Ernest Sherren, printer. Effects 1,017 Resworn March 1898, 749 pounds.
