Notes about Meier "Mischa" (Meier "Mischa") Leiseroff

Lived with his wife in the Rue de Brabant 266 in Schaerbeek, Brussels. During German

occupation took part in the Resistance. He picked up British parachutists in the field and gave them shelter at his home during the first night. He was a member of the group 'Gaspard'. Gaspard was a police officer in Schaerbeek. He survived and testified for the State about Mischa's resistance work, so his wife received a 'pension de guerre'. Mischa was allegedly betrayed by the butcher's aid in

the street. He was arrested twice. The first time they could not prove anything and he continued his resistance work. He was arrested a second time November 25, 1940. They kept him prisoner in the Saint Gilles prison outside Brussels where he underwent severe interrogations. Eventually he was sentenced to death for espionage for England and executed August 16, 1941 in the "Tir National" in Schaerbeek. When his wife was finally permitted to visit him, she was led to his cell and found only his clothes: he had been executed already.

He left a diary to his wife; the last part has been written with his

blood.

In Le Soir - a newspaper which collaborated with the Germans - of 18

August 1941 is published:

Le juif apatride Meier Leiseroff et les ressortissants belges Joseph et

Guillaume Koekelbergh ont ete fusilles ce 16 aout du chef d'espionnage en

faveur de l'Angleterre.

On the day of his execution his remains were buried at the Elsene cemetery (Brussels). 24 April 1947 his remains were reburied at the War Cemetery of Schaerbeek, parcel 18, number 16, tomb 50.

His name is mentioned

on the Jewish War Memorial in Anderlecht; a copy of this memorial is found

in the museum of Lochamei HaGetaot in Israel. He is also mentioned in the 'Livre d'Or de la Resistance

Belge'.

In november 2012 a publication by the Spanish historian Moises Dominguez-Nunez on the Spanish Civil War revealed that Misha was one of the important photographers of the Badajoz - massacre on Aug. 17, 1936, who took some historic pictures which were also published in the British press.
