Biography

Services were held for Leona Haan who died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 after battling cancer. She attained the age of 66 years, nine months and 28 days.

Leona Mae Klinghagen was born on a farm northwest of Worthing on Dec.12, 1934, the daughter of Abel and Matilda (Boomgaarden) Klinghagen. She grew up southwest of Lennox, attending District 23 rural school then graduating from Hurley High School. Leona attended Central College in Pella, IA. She returned to Lennox where she worked for the Valley Exchange Bank.

On Mar. 22, 1956 she married Donald A. Haan at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Lennox.

The couple made their home on farms near Davis and Lennox until moving to their current farm in 1968.

Leona had a passion for children and in addition to the couple's own children they took in twelve foster daughters over several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Abel in 1973 and Matilda in 2000.

After an initial diagnosis with cancer in 1982, Leona battled illness since that time. In 1998 she became a resident of Covington Heights Nursing Home in Sioux Falls where she was active in resident church life and led a Bible study.
