After working on a Wisconsin dairy farm, Cleo L. Tatro moved back to South Dakota with her husband and family and she went to work cleaning rooms at the Lowe Hospital in Mobridge. It was soon found that her gentle and comforting manner was more suited for patients than cleaning and she became a nurse's aide, a position she returned to after the death of her husband, Milton, in 1966.

Cleo was always a hard worker, very particular about how things were done, and the people she worked with were so important to her.

She lived in a number of homes in Mobridge until an uncle died in Mobridge and willed his home to her. She lived in that home for 20 years. After she retired from the Mobridge Hospital in 1983, she continued to enjoy baking, cooking for company, working in her yard, and having that special cup of coffee and a kind word from her friends and family. She kept busy with her 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In 1997 she moved to the River Ridge Apartment and then in October of 2004, to the Beverly Healthcare Center.

A 90th birthday party was held for her on Saturday, April 15, and she went to the home of her daughter Frances and Jim Peterson where all her children and grandchildren gathered to help her celebrate the big event. She had a good time. A few days later, on Thursday, April 20, 2006, Cleo died quietly in her sleep at the Beverly Healthcare Center.

She was born April 18, 1916, to Bert and Maggie (Wientjes) Mulder in Mound City, the youngest of four children in the family. She was raised by her father after her mother died of pneumonia in 1920. Her father gave her the nickname of "Dandelion."

In later years, her daughter Frances said, "I don't know how her father came up with that nickname. She had bright red hair and freckles."

Cleo lived on numerous farms north of Glenham as she grew up and attended the rural Wayside School.

Milton Tatro came into her life at a barn dance and on Feb. 25, 1933, they were married. They lived in South Dakota and their first child, Joan, was born. A year later they moved to Stanley, Wis., where Charlotte, Gail and Frances were born. They continued to live on the family dairy farm until February of 1943 when they moved back to the Campbell County area and farmed. Carol Jean was born in 1946.

In that same year they moved to Mobridge and the following year Cleo began work at the Lowe Hospital. In 1949 she became a nurse's aide and in 1950 Linda Lee was born. In 1958 they moved back to a farm north of Glenham. There, Cleone (or "Subby" as her father called her) was born in 1959. They lived on the farm until 1966 when Milton died from an aneurysm. That fall, Cleo went back to work at the hospital.

Cleo is survived by her children, Joan Peterson of Dickinson, N.D., Charlotte Anderson of Mobridge, Gail Nordstrom of Colorado Springs, Colo., Frances (Jim) Peterson of Mobridge, Carol (Frank) Ducheneaux of Timber Lake, Billie (Jim) Shillingstad of Huron, Greg (Gwen) Tatro of Morristown and Subby (Rick) Reed of Sartell, Minn.; and grandchildren, Walter, Penny, Jeff, Troy, Barry, Kim, Mark, Jenny, Jessie, Julie, Eddie, Mae, Paul, John, Frankie, Jina, B.J., Tessa, Kayla, Steve, Scott, Kristopher, Savanna and Allie.

In addition to her husband, three sisters, one grandchild and her parents preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Cleo were Monday, April 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. The Rev. Doug Westerlund and the Rev. Dennis Fonkert officiated.

Elaine Pringle was organist. Kim Brewer was soloist for "On Eagles Wings" and "In the Garden." Hymns by the congregation were "the Old Rugged Cross" and "Here I Am Lord."

Casketbearers were Barry Nordstrom, Mark Nordstrom, Jeff Anderson, Troy Anderson, B.J. Shillingstad, Kristopher Reed, Eddie Ducheneaux, John Ducheneaux, Paul Ducheneaux, Steve Palweski, Scott Palweski and Walt Peterson. Honorary bearers were all of Cleo's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.
