Melvin was born on a farm near Tea, SD on September 23, 1925 to Will A and Bena G (Statmeyer) Schoffelman. Melvin attended the Schoffelman School through the 8th grade. He worked for Jerry Leonard Motors in Lennox and farmed with his father.

He was united in marriage to Aldora Mammenga on June 22, 1948. They farmed near Tea, Hartford and Humboldt for 30 years before retiring in 1979. He was a Farm Bureau member serving as President and served on the Wellington Township Board. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hartford for 50 years serving as Sunday school teacher and Superintendent, Lay Leader, and council member.

After retiring from farming he and Aldora moved to Hartford where Melvin continued to sell Pioneer Seed Corn, worked at the Sioux Falls Stockyards and West Central School Transportation.

Melvin loved playing cards, visiting and his Ford Vehicles. His pride and joy were his Ford Truck and his tractors which he loved to take to the Threshing Bees and drive in the parades.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ervin (infant), Lester and his daughter, Robin.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 63 years, Aldora, children, Ronda (Wayne) Maass of Goddard, KS, and Rodney (Kristi) Schoffelman of Sioux Falls. 4 grandchildren, Nikki Schoffelman, Nathan (Candi) Maass, Benjamin Maass, and James(Erika) Maass; 5 great-grandchilden, Marley Black Lance, Hunter, Gavin and Isaac Maass, and Kadyn Franklin.
