George, Iowa Obituary: Rock Valley, Iowa: Lena Groen, 90, of Rock Valley, died Monday, April 18, 2011 at Whispering Heights. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hope Reformed Church, George, Iowa with Rev. Al Honken officiating. Burial will be at Hope Reformed Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley is in charge of the arrangements.

Lena Bos was born August 17, 1920 at Steen, Minnesota, the daughter of Arend and Harmjye (Boer) Bos. She grew up in southwest Minnesota, and the George and Boyden, Iowa areas where the family farmed.

Lena married Clarence Groen on March 20, 1941. Together they farmed near Little Rock, Rock Rapids and later near Doon, Iowa. Clarence died in 2005. Lena moved to Rock Valley in October of 2007. She was a lifetime member of Hope Reformed Church in George where she was very active in teaching Sunday School, Catechism, and had directed the Junior Choir for over 40 years. Lena was an avid gardener and was passionate about raising her chickens, as she loved being outdoors. She enjoyed sewing and doing board games, and music, whether it was singing or listening. Lena greatly loved being with her family.

Surviving relatives include two sons, Curtis (Gayle) Groen of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, and Terry (Robin) Groen of Dalhart, Texas; three daughters, Glenda (Bernie) Sneller of Dalhart, Texas, Marcie (Chuck) King of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Colleen (Al) Van Beek of Rock Valley; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Johanna Freeks of Long Beach, California and Henrietta (Gerrit) Korthals of Boyden, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; son, Verlyn Groen; son-in-law, Joe Looft; grandsons, Tyler Van Beek and Micah Groen; granddaughter, Melissa Groen; great-granddaughter, Ashley Smith; brothers, Gerrit John Bos and Gerrit Bos; sisters, Bertha Bliek, Dena Klarenbeek, Minnie Klarenbeek, Carrie Koele, Gertrude Siebrands and Alice Koele.
