"Leonard E. Gelder (1924-2010)

WELLSBURG - Leonard Edwin Gelder, 86, of Wellsburg, died Saturday, May 15, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Ledyard, son of Dick and Marie Gelder. He married his wife Kathleen on Nov. 26, 1946, at her parents' farm home.

Mr. Gelder graduated from Cooper Elementary School, rural Wellsburg, then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then began his career as a carpenter in 1946, working for his brother Stoffer and Dick Thorne, then in partnership with Wallace Meyer. On his own in 1961, he purchased the cabinet shop and was owner and operator until retiring in 1997. He was a member of Wellsburg Reformed Church.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Roger (Linda) of Cody, Wyo., and Lee (Domanic) of Wellsburg; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and four sisters, Harmina, Violet, Annie and Fannie.

Preceded in death by: an infant son, James Robert; seven brothers; and a sister.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wellsburg Reformed Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Wellsburg AMVETS Post 91 and American Legion Post 213. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg.
