Dick Gelder Sr. Dies Monday At County Hospital

Funeral services for Dick Gelder Sr., 73, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with Rev. Gideon Wolbrink officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be at the Doyen Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Thursday. At that time it will be moved to the church for public viewing until time of the service.

Mr. Gelder passed away at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Grundy County Memorial hospital following a lingering illness. He was admitted to the hospital October 1.

He was born July 15, 1892, in Luchtenburg [RP Note: probably Leuchtenburg], Germany, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gelder. He came to the United States at the age of 12 and settled with his family at Kamrar.

On August 25, 1913, he was united in marriage to Marie Gray. The couple farmed in the Kamrar area until they moved to Wellsburg. In 1933 the Gelders moved to their farm 2 1/2 miles northwest of Wellsburg where they resided ever since.

He is survived by his wife and 11 children, six sons and five daughters. They are Henry, Britt; Dick Jr., Wellsburg; Stoffer, Kamrar; Mrs. Marie Cornelius, Cedar Falls; Gerrit, Des Moines; Leonard, Wellsburg; Darold Burma, Big Lake, Minn; Hermina, Mrs. Elton Huisman, Kamrar; Violet, Mrs. K. D. Adams, Wellsburg; Annie, Mrs. Robert Hammer, Miami, Arizona; and Fannie, Mrs. Robert Larson, Chula Vista, Calif.

Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Annie Gerdes of Cleves, Mrs. Minnie Burma of Rice, Minn.; and Mrs. Dena Seehusen, Fern; plus 44 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters, one daughter in infancy and one son, Arnold, who was killed in action during World War II.

Dick Gelder Sr. passed away in the Grundy County Memorial hospital on Monday evening, Oct. 18 following a lingering illness. He had entered the hospital on Oct. 1st. He reached the age of 73 years, 3 months, and 3 days.

Mr. Gelder was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gelder on July 15, 1892, in Luchtenburg, Germany. He received his early education in the schools in Germany. At the age of 12 years, he and his family came to America, and settled near Ackley. On August 25, 1913, he was united in marriage to Marie Gray. This union was blessed with 13 children. After their marriage they lived for a short time in the Kamrar area, and also for a while in Kossuth Co. In 1933 they moved to their present place northwest of Wellsburg. They were privileged to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 1963, with their family and friends. He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, having joined on December

Those who preceded him in death were his parents, one brother, two sisters, one daughter in infancy, a son Arnold, who lost his life serving his country during world War II and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Marie; six sons and five daughters. They are: Henry of Britt; Dick Jr. of Wellsburg; Stoffer of Kamrar; Mrs. Marie Cornelius of Cedar Falls; Gerrit of Des Moines; Leonard of Wellsburg; Daroldof Big Lake, Minnesota; Hermina, Mrs. Elton Huisman of Kamrar; Violet, Mrs. Kenneth Adams of Wellsburg; Annie, Mrs. Robert Hammer of Miama, Arizona; Fannie, Mrs. Robert Larson of Chula Vista, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Gerdes of Cleves, Mrs. Minnie Burma of Rice, Minnesota; Mrs. Dena Seehusen of Fern; 44 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

It was the request of Mr. Gelder, that his six sons serve as pallbearers for his funeral service.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Doyen Funeral home and at 1:30 at the Reformed church. Rev. Gideon Wolbrink was officiating clergyman. Music was furnished by a quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Abels, Mrs. George Anderson,and Harold Lindaman, accompanied by Miss Marcella Neessen. Flower attendants were Mrs. Peter Ruter and Mrs. Anna Riebkes.

Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
