"Lorraine M. Karkela (August 29, 1931 - October 17, 2015)

Karkela, Lorraine M, age 84 of Savage, MN passed away October 17, 2015 at Cherrywood Pointe Assisted living in Savage after a prolonged battle with cancer. Lorraine was born on August 29th, 1931 in Guckeen MN. She grew up on a farm in the Blue Earth area and graduated from Frost High School. She then attended Waldorf College graduating in pre-nursing and became a Registered Nurse through the Fairview School of Nursing. She was an RN at Fairview for 11 years becoming head nurse before marrying and starting a family. Lorraine married Willard Karkela on March 21, 1964. They moved to a small lake in Savage, MN in 1970. There the couple lived and raised their son Todd. Lorraine was a steadfast wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor understanding the value of all those close to her. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, good conversation, reading and her tea. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, she continued her dedication to family and friends throughout her long fight with the disease. She remained brave, positive and never looked back even during her final months. Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Willard and parents, Norman and Annabel Oswald. She is survived by her loving son, Todd (Julie) and grandson, Mitchell; brother, Raymond (Patricia) Oswald, sister-in-law, Joyce Karkela, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Wednesday October 21, 2015 at 11 AM at the Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, 3611 N. Berens Rd NW. Prior Lake, MN with visitation on Tuesday (10/20) from 4-7 PM at the White Funeral Home, 12804 Nicollet Ave S., Burnsville (952 894 5080) also 1 hr. prior to service at church. Interment is Thursday at 10 AM at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the many friends and family who continuously reached out to Lorraine over the years to lend their support and encouragement.
