Thomas Bosma, Sr. was the second child of six children - four sons and two daughters - born to Lorence Bosma and Anna (Rust) Bosma. Anna Rust was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, March 29, 1954 and came to America with her parents in 1866 at the age of 12 years. She grew to young womanhood at Wellsburg, Iowa. Her first job was working in the home of an uncle, Harm Rust. His father, Lorence Bosma, was born in Germany where he grew to young manhood. After seven years of apprenticeship training in blacksmithing and wagon making, he came to America to establish his trade. During this time he made seven voyages to Germany. He also made Wellsburg his home.

The young couple met and after the usual courtship were married in 1874. Although handcrafted work flourished after a time, machinery took precedence and he sought other work. The couple farmed in Steamboat Rock, Lohrville and Wesleyareas in Iowa before moving to Minnesota. Lorence Bosma passed away in 1912 while living at Breckenridge, Minnesota. Anna (Rust) Bosma came back to Titonka, Iowa with her family and later to Buffalo Center. She passed away on May 23,1932.

Thomas Bosma, Sr. was born February 1, 1879 in Grundy County, Iowa. He grew to boyhood there and later came to Buffalo Center. Florence (Adams) Bosma was born in Butler County, Iowa on June 1, 1884 and later moved to Buffalo Center withher parents.

Florence's parents were Moderke (Westendorf) Adams, born July 9, 1856; and Adam Albert Adams was born January 11, 1851. Both were born in Grosmidlum, Germany. They were married September 30, 1876 in the Reformed Church in Uttum,Germany, where the Adams have worshipped for over 500 years. The roof was once destroyed during the war and was restored by a relative. A disease at one time destroyed the trees so bricks were used for building instead. Many relatives found employment hand-making bricks, until replaced by machinery, causing many people to come to America."

"Word has it that Florence's parents spent seven weeks at sea in an open boat, making the crossing with five small children, and arriving in America in April. Florence was born the following June 1, 1884, the sixth of 16 children - 10daughters and 6 sons. The family came to Butler County and later to Buffalo Center. Adam Adams worked as railroad section boss until he contracted pneumonia (then called lung fever). Penicillin had not been discovered and he passed away at age 59. Moderke continued to live in Buffalo Center until she passed away in 1939 at 83 years of age.

By now young Thomas was engaged in farming and had met Florence. They were married January 8, 1902 by Pastor Carl Swyter. To this union 14 children were born - seven sons and seven daughters. Sundays meant Sunday school and church,often Sunday company dinners. In the afternoon, horse shoe for men, games for children or jumping rope, enjoying garden and flowers for the mothers - maybe sharing recipes, from memory. Winter nights were for popping corn or hotchocolate, father playing accordion, reading from the Big Bible with the beautiful pictures. Bedtime, the little Bosmas in white nightgowns kneeling bedside to recite a German prayer. Sunday school picnics at the neighbors. A wholenickel to spend. Mother's little tune she sang, her foot rocking the baby's cradle, her hands busy mending. Son, Bert, was one of many children taken during dysentery epidemic of 1908 at the age of five months.

The years went by, and one by one the other 13 married and raised families, many in the Buffalo Center vicinity, active in church and community. Happiness for the parents was having the family gatherings. Their love of the landinstilled in their children, agriculture and various phases of it had been the family's main occupation down through the years. Change of times finds electricians, business managers, teachers, insurance and real estate personnel,secretaries, to name a few.

Thomas Bosma, Sr. passed away on the farm he loved on January 19, 1948. Florence moved into Buffalo Center, where she lived for seven years. She became ill and after a few years of lingering illness passed away on July 1, 1955.

Their legacy passed on to their family is cherished, as they seek to uphold it through prayer and guidance. Blessed be their memory.
