Diedrich "Dick" Wempen was born on May 24, 1875 in Neuenburg, Germany, the son of John and Meta (Lubben) Wempen. While in Germany he worked in a factory where he lost two toes in an injury. As a young man in his early twenties, he cameacross the big water to America, in 1898.

On August 21, 1906 Dick married Grace Adams of Buffalo Center. Grace was born on March 6, 1883 in Grosmidlum, Germany, the daughter of Adam and Moederke (Westendorf) Adams. When she was about a year old the family moved to America.Dick and Grace made their first home near Little Rock, Iowa; in 1912 they moved with their children - Amos, Margaret, and William - to a farm in Winnebago County two and a half miles morth of Buffalo Center. In 1941 they moved two mileswest to a farm in Kossuth County. They lived there until they retired from the farm and moved into the northeast part of Buffalo Center.

After retiring, they enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. They were early members of the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center. They were married almost 63 years when Grace passed away in August of 1969; Dick"
