"Obituary for Kirk D. Winter
A funeral service for Kirk D. Winter was held Friday, June 3, 2016, at 10:30 AM at First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, with Reverend William Peake officiating. Burial was in Olena Mound Cemetery.
Kirk Dale Winter was born to Evelyn Doris (Bappe) and George Winter on May 12, 1961, in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Kirk was the youngest of three sons. He was baptized and confirmed at First Reformed Church, attended school at and graduated from Buffalo Center-Rake Community High school with the "Class of 1979."
Kirk then went on to North Iowa Area Community College, where he obtained his Associate of Science Degree in 1981. In 1983, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota. Kirk was Board Certified in 1983, licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health in 1984, and licensed by the Iowa Department of Health in 1990.
During his senior year at the University of Minnesota, Kirk met Cyndi in a stairwell of the dorm, Middlebrook Hall, where they both lived. On September 6, 1986 at St. Marks Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Kirk and Cyndi exchanged their vows. The couple made Rochester, Minnesota their home. Kirk practiced at Macken Funeral Home from 1983 through 1987. In the fall of that year, they moved to Eagan and he then worked at Werness Brothers Funeral Chapels in Minneapolis through 1990; when he returned to Buffalo Center to join with his family's funeral home. Samantha Corrine was born in November of that year and Alex Michael completed the family in October of 1993.
Kirk was a member of First Reformed Church, its choir and served as Consistory Secretary and Deacon. For 20 years, he was a member of the Buffalo Center Fire Department and was currently serving as their historian. Kirk was also on the Timely Mission Nursing Home Board for 3 terms and as the Board Secretary.
Traveling was something that he and his family enjoyed doing. Every year Kirk, Cyndi, and the kids would take road trips to places like California, Colorado, Virginia, and so many others in between. Orlando was where the memories were made. Kirk loved Disney and wanted to go work there when he retired from being a funeral director. Almost every year, they would go down for a week or two at a time during the Halloween season. The last trip was with Samantha and Alex in October of 2014.
Kirk and Cyndi built their dream home and moved to the country in August of 2000. He watched his kids go from children to adults there. He enjoyed walks down the road with his family and dogs, King and Oreo. Kirk was also the reason why the family was into hockey. Once he knew that hockey was coming back to Minnesota, he surprised everyone with season tickets to the Minnesota Wild; they were season ticket holders for nine years.
On Friday morning, May 27, peace came to him and Kirk departed from this life at the age of 55.
His memory will always be cherished by his two children, Samantha (Jeff) Wittmer of Estherville, IA and Alex (fiancé Mikki Holstad) of Indianola, IA; his mother, Evelyn Winter of Buffalo Center, IA; mother and father-in-law, Mike and Bonnie Jellinek of St. Paul, MN; brothers, Randall (Laura) Winter of Forest City, IA; Bart (Medara) Winter of Lake Mills, IA; nieces and nephews, Kyle (Kelly) Winter and their daughter, Lily, of Buffalo Center, IA; Rebecca (Bill) Meyer of Chicago, IL; Sarah (Brett) Coberley and their daughter, Kayla, of Morning Sun, IA; Jenny (John) Kolb and their three children, Cody, Grace, and Jacob, of East Bethel, MN; Natalie (Ben) Simonet and their two children, Parker and Penelope, of Minneapolis, MN; Kessa (Alex) Meyer of Grimes, IA; Tyler Olson of Lake Mills, IA; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Kirk was preceded in death by his wife Cyndi, his father George, and his grandparents."
