Note: Kate Ackerman, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob DeVries was born at Holland, Grundy Co., IA. In 1889 she came to Lyon county with her parents and siblings. They settled on a farm 1 mile N and 2 East of George. Here she grew to womanhood attending the public school, the Zoar church and Sunday School and helping in the home. On March 8, 1920 she was united in marriage to Edward P Ackerman. They first lived on a farm 8 miles E of George in Osceola Co. In 1923 they moved to the farm where she was reared. She lived on this place for 32 years.

In October 1928 she joined the Zoar Presbyterian Church on her confession of faith in Christ. She remained a faithful member until her death. She was active in church work teaching Sunday School classes for a number of years. She activein the Loyal Women's Circle. She was always faithful in church attendance with the church an important part of her life.

She will be greatly missed by her many friends and relatives, especially will she be missed by her children and grandchildren to whom she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She passed away at a Sioux City hospital, March 10, 1958 having reached the age of 64 years, 1 month and 15 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing 3 children; Fredwin Ackerman of George, Jay Ackerman of George, Mabel (Mrs Dick) Gronewold of George; 8 grandchildren; 1 sister Anna (Mrs Wessel) Hassebroek of Buffalo Center, IA 2 brothers Jasper DeVries of Ellsworth, MN and Ted DeVries of George.

Her husaband Edward P Ackerman passed away June 26, 1944. Her parents Mr and Mrs Jacov DeVries and 4 sisters Susan, Maggie, Dena, and Jennie preceded her in death.

"Ackerman, Ed - Kate DeVries

Ed Ackerman was the son of Peter and Margaret Hassebroek Ackerman and they lived in northwest Iowa but not in the George area. He married Kate, daughter of Jacob G. and Frauke Andresen DeVries. They were long time farmers in the George area. Ed served in World War I.

The couple had three children and they are Mabel Dell, who married Dick Gronewold and after his death, married Ervin Drenth; the oldest was a son, Fredwin (Hans) and he married Harriet Krull; the middle child was Jay and he married Anna May Duin. Pictured here on a warm summer day are left to right: Kate, Ed holding Mabel, Jan and Fredwin."
