Velma Dixon, age 72, of Burt, died on Monday, March 29, 2010, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Algona, with Rev. Steven McElroy officiating. Burial was in the Burt Township Cemetery.

Velma June Groen, the daughter of Harm and Kate (Welp) Groen, was born on June 21, 1937, in Burt. She graduated from Burt High School in 1955 and was proud to have been part of the successful Burt Girls Basketball team of 1954-55.

Velma was united in marriage with Orville "Lee" Dixon on Feb. 24, 1957 at the Burt United Methodist Church. She had worked as a co-manager at Exceptional Treasures, retiring in 2003. Velma was a member of the Burt United Methodist Church until the church closed and she transferred to the First United Methodist Church in Algona. She was also a member of the morning coffee club in Burt. Velma enjoyed watching her grandchildren's activities, working in her church, playing cards and going to the casino.

Left to cherish Velma's memory is her husband of 53 years, Lee; one son, Tony Dixon and his wife Karla of Ames; two daughters, Sandy Person and her husband Larry of Algona and Nancy Dixon-Knecht and her husband Jerome of Whittemore; five grandchildren, Kelsey and Haley Dixon, Megan, Grant and Derek Person; and two sisters, Kathleen Pringle and her husband Gary of The Woodlands, Texas and Gladys Doege of Ankeny. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Richard, Art and John Groen; and three sisters, Lavina Devine, Betty Gettman and Patricia Langfitt.
