"HARLEY AND SUSAN (GRAY) HASSEBROEK

Sue, Harley, and Johnathan [Photograph]

On November 30, 1959, Harley James was born to Harvey and Grace Hassebroek. Imagine Grace's surprise when all she thought she had was a bad gallbladder. The Interesting part is that this "C" section occurred in what is now their living room in the Clinic Apartments.

On October 28, 1960, Susan Kay was born to Lester and Irene Gray. Imagine Ilene's surprise when she thought all she had was a case of stomach flu. Ironically, a normal birth occurred in what is now an adjoining apartment to Harley's folks.

Both Susan and Harley received their primary education at Buffalo Center Community Schools. Harley graduated in 1978; this was the last year of an independent school in town. Susan graduated 1979, which was the first year we were consolidated with Rake. Sue went on to graduate from NIACC in the spring of '81 with an AA degree. Harley attended ISU through the spring of 1980, majoring in farm operations.

In October of 1981 they started dating. By Christmas they were engaged, and on July 31, 1982 they were married. That fall, Sue started working at Wilso's grocery as clerk and meat department assistant. Harley was raising hogs, workingfor area farmers and farming 40 acres on the home farm. By 1984 when his Dad retired, Harley assumed full responsibility for the farm. this was the third generation of Hassebroeks to farm in Section 19, Buffalo Township, since Wessel Hassenbroek moved there in the spring of 1933.

On July 28, 1985 Johnathan Wesley was born at Forest City Hospital. He was welcomed home by a proud mother and father and jubilant grandparents. It seems now that Johnathan enjoys growing up on the home farm as much as his father did.At this writing, Johnathan is in kindergarten at Buffalo Center-Rake.

It seems the more things change the more they stay the same.

Both Harley and Sue keep busy with the usual daily chores on the farm. In addition, both are involved in activities at First Congregational Church. Harley is currently a trustee and Sue teaches Sunday school. Harley is also a member of the Ambulance Crew and a director on the Cattlemen's Association.

An interesting coincidence is that Harley was 7 years old when Buffalo Center had its Diamond Jubilee. Johnathan will be 7 years old when we celebrate out Centennial.

In closing, a couple of observations are to be pointed out. As the fourth generation grows up on the farm land, our community and our faith in God are the glue that's held us all tohgether over the years. The new generation willcontinue to grow and prosper as long as we maintain these values. Thank you to our mothers and fathers for instilling these values.
