De mannen van Croy heten vandaag de dag Crooijmans, Crooymans, Croijmans of Croymans. Maar ook Kroijmans komt voor, net als Kroijmann. De voorouders van al deze mannen (en vrouwen!) van Croy woonden en werkten in en bij de buurtschap Croy in het oosten van Noord-Brabant, bij het gelijknamige kasteel. Zo is ook de oorsprong van de familienaam te verklaren.

De verschillende schrijfwijzen zijn in de loop der eeuwen ontstaan. Zo kregen Joannes Croijmans en Adriana van de Kerkhof in 1827 een zoon, die ze Peter noemden. Hij werd op 28 september 1827 als Crooimans ingeschreven in de burgerlijke stand van Helmond. Maar ook bij het verhuizen naar een andere gemeente veranderde de schrijfwijze van de naam vaak. Veel mensen konden zelf niet schrijven en lieten de spelling van hun achternaam over aan de ambtenaar van de burgerlijke stand.
