Notes about George Harrower

1. George Harrower is eventually found in the Scottish 1901 census, living as a boarder in a house in Mill Street, Tillicoultry, aged 57, which is obviously incorrect as he was born in 1849. He is working as a Tweed Weaver.
Thomas Harrower, George's Son, is also a boarder, living in the same house, aged 24, working as a Woollen Yarn Twister.
George and Thomas have obviously had to move away from the family for work, as the rest of the family are living in Havelock Street, Wilton, Hawick during the same census.

    4. 1911 Scotland Census Scotlands People, 1911 HARROWER, GEORGE (Census 789/ 23/ 6) Parish: Wilton 1911 Scotland Census [Scotlandspeople.com] The 1911 census was taken on Sunday 2 April under provisions in the Census (Great Britain) Act 1910. The records were released on 5 April 2011 following the end of their 100 year closure period. There were new questions relating to fertility of marriage: on duration of marriage; the number of living children born to each marriage; and the number alive at the time of the census. There were changes to several others: categories for people with disabilities were revised and the introductory section to the third report on the 1911 census refers to the intended use of the terms as: lunatic - in cases where the infirmity had been acquired during life imbecile - in extreme cases where the infirmity had existed from birth or an early age feeble-minded - in milder cases where the infirmity had existed from birth or an early age.

      In Memorium —
      ln loving memory of George Harrower, who died 16th February, 1915.
      It is hard to part with those we love,
      Though parting days will come,
      Yet let us hope to meet above,
      For this is not our home.
      We cannot tell who next may fall
      Beneath the chastening rod—
      One must go first—then let us all
      Prepare to meet our God.
      [lnserted by his widow and daughter Jenny, 4 Wellington Street]

      Sleep on, dear father, thy work is o'er,
      Thy willing hands will toil no more;
      Nothing but our aching hearts can say
      How we miss thee night and day.
