Pieter was schipper in Andijk, en bracht groenten naar en van de veiling te Medemblik. Na het teloorgaan van zijn bedrijf verhuisde hij met zijn familie naar Den Helder, een Nederlandse marinestad, in 1940, waar hij veel banen had. Den Helder werd in de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebombardeerd. Uiteindelijk verhuisden zij naar Opperdoes waar ze nog vele jaren woonden.
