------------------------------------

It took quite a process to identify Grietje’s real parents. Her baptism record was inadvertently missed by transcribers and so she only appears in the original copy of it.

According to old family notes, Grietje’s parents were Simon Groot (Biest) and Maartje Mantel (Fuut). But according to Family Search, Grietje was born on March 15 1839 in Andijk to Simon Groot and Aafje Mantel (unfortunately no middle names for them).

In a Boedelscheiding dated March 14 1861, Grietje ended up with quite a bit of land and money from her first husband, Evert Brouwer. She received 2 meadows in Andijk in Section B, # 63 and 64 of 354 roeden 90 ellen worth 8450 guilders, 85 roeden 50 ellen of meadow land in section B # 93 worth 4200 guilders, and other goods worth 297 guilders 81 ¼ cents, for a total of 12,947 guilders 81 ½ cents. She had 5691 guilders 56 ¼ cents in bills, leaving her 7256 guilders 25 cents. The will also laid out the inheritance of Trijntje Veerman, widow of Jan Pietersz Brouwer. On Grietje and Trijntje had a correction in two tracts of land – I think they got more. Grietje is called a bouwmeisje (farm girl) in this record.

In trying to identify the parents, I discovered there were 2 couples in Andijk who could be Grietje’s parents: Simon Pieters Groot and Aafje Jacobs Mantel, and Simon Jans Groot and Aafje Klaas Mantel. Grietje’s marriage record to Willem Bloemendaal in 1863 says that he was a carpenter and she, the widow of Evert Brouwer, was an agricultural worker (ie. a female farmer). Looking further on Genlias, I discovered Griet married Evert Brouwer at age 19 (quite young for marriages at that time) on April 23 1858. On both records her parents were listed as Simon Groot and Aafje Mantel – still no help as to who were her real parents. Now I turned to the marriage records of the Simons and Aafjes. Simon Pieters and Aafje Jacobs were married on April 8 1838 in Andijk, which would make Grietje born about 9 months later. Simon Jans and Aafje Klaas were married March 4 1852 when Grietje was 13 years old. Since I can’t imagine a good Reformed couple getting married 13 years after the birth of their daughter, I came to the conclusion that Simon Pieters and Aafje Jacobs must have been Grietje’s parents. The census of 1901 proves it, listing Cornelis' 1832 and Grietje's 1839 birth dates along with 2 children, Jacob and Grietje. Continuing the investigation, Simon Groot (Biest) had a son named Jacob, And his daughter Grietje Biest, it seems, married Karel Keesman from Enkhuizen. So our Simon must have been nicknamed “Biest”.
