..... Toen waren er schippers/vaarders die de producten naar Hoorn brachten en aldaar ook voor die tuinders verkochten. Die hadden een behoorlijke vertrouwenspositie, maar het is gebeurd dat die werd beschaamd. Het was overigens een gigantische reis, met de schuit, zonder motor, via Hoogkarspel, Westwoud, naar de Bangert en Zwaag. Daar blokkeerde de weg de doorvaart en moest men over het "Bangerter Rad", waarbij de schuiten over de weg werden gehaald, dan aan de andere kant verder om via de Koewijzend verder om in Hoorn te komen. Van dhr. L. Sluys, onze wethouder, kwamen we aan de weet dat zijn voorvaderen, tot en met zijn eigen vader, Jb.Sluys, altijd bij het vrachtvaren betrokken zijn geweest. Een eigenlijk triest, maar anderzijds ook kostelijk verhaal kwam op deze wijze tot ons. Overgrootvader, W. Sluys, was zo'n schipper, hij ging tweemaal per week naar Hoorn. Hij vertrok dan 's nachts om twee uur met de schuit volgens boven omschreven weg. Het eerste stuk als het even kon zeilen, doch bij Westwoud hield dat op vanwege de vele bruggen. Geen nood, want er waren ook twee trekhonden mee, die aan een lijn op de wal werden gezet. Maar hoe hield je die aan de gang? Nou dat was een doordenkertje! Aan de kop van de lijn werd het vrouwtje, de teef, geposteerd en op vijf meter daarachter het mannetje, de reu. Het zou nu terecht als dierenmishandeling worden beschouwd, maar daar hield men zich toen niet mee op. Reken er op dat het mannetje zich uitsloofde om bij het vrouwtje te komen en die op haar beurt deed haar uiterste best om weg te blijven. Resultaat ...... de schipper hoefde alleen maar te sturen. Dat mocht ook wel want het was evengoed al weer 12 uur 's nachts eer hij thuis was. In de jaren later werd de reis danig ingekort, toen men de producten kwijt kon in de Broekerhaven, gelegen aan de, toen nog, Zuiderzee.
