In 1078 and 1079 a Countess Ermengarde with substantial property in Looz and the Looz sphere made donations of land to churches in Liège. In the first deed she reserved 10 mansi at Bree to a Count Gerhard.14 and in the second she designated a Count Dietrich as advocate for estates at Bree and Gruitrode donated to the cathedral church of St. Lambert.15 It is reasonable to suppose that Ermengarde was the widow of the very recently deceased Count Immo of Looz.16 In the second of these items Arnold I of Looz makes his first appearance in the historical record.
Vanderkindere disputed Ermengarde's identity as Immo's wife. A gratuitous and suspect interpolation in Annalista Saxo is thought to imply that Immo's wife was a certain Swanehilde whose son became burgrave of Mainz and count of Rieneck.17
