Dispute Over a Bill at Rich Gulch Results In a Murder by a Cowboy.

MOKELUMNE HILL, June 17. About 10 o'clock Friday night a courier named B. M. The trouble arose over a hotel bill. After a dispute, which occurred at 2 o'clock, Johns left and went to Mokelumne Hill on horseback, returning at 9:20. Accoding to Langleys Directory of San Francisco, Benjamins mother worked at a tobacco and cigar shop at 41 4th st. in San Francisco. Magdalenas father worked at the bakery and coffee saloon across the street at 28 4th St. You can see how Ben and Lena could have met just by being in their parentss stores. The family story passed down is that Ben was washing windows and saw Lena and fell in love. Today the approximate location of where these stores were in San Francisco is now Old Navy (the bakery) and the Marriot Hotel (cigar shop) on 4th and Market Streets. The original buildings fell down in the 1906 earthquake.
