**To New Idria --
It matters not how the wish was originally excited, but for many months we have had a desire to visit the New Idria Mines. Not having seen anything in print descriptive of the journey, and not wishing to get beyond the bounds of civilization entirely unprotected, we exercised our influence to secure the companionship of a venerable gentleman, believing his presence with us would have a tendency to check our indiscretions when away from home, and possibly would prevent the indiscretions of dangerous men who have sometimes frequented the road, and whose past exploits have lent to that part of the country the enchantment of adventure and peril. Professor W. VAN DOREN consented to undertake the journey with us and we are proud to acknowledge that his conversation, gentlemanly manners, and scholarly observations were of great advantage to us, as they served to lessen the inconveniences of travel, to remove the sense of solitariness to which all are subject on such country roads, and to furnish suggestive matter for thoughtful consideration, which is very desirable to a writer.

On the morning of the 21st of November, we left Hollister, handling the ribbons over the best Hollister team procured from Jo. SOWLEs stable, and directed our course southward continuing on the east side of the Tres Pinos river until we arrived at GROGANs district, where we crossed the stream and pursued our way on the west side, occasionally taking the bed of the stream which spreads out very widely leaving no embankment for a roadway in many places

Passing numerous ranches to the right and left intending to visit and notice them on the home stretch, we rapidly pass on by the various feed stations where good cheer for man and beast are guaranteed, until we find ourselves at the Emmett House, kept by one of Emmets admirers, a happy healthy looking host, C.C. McCLELLAN. Here our horses were baited and we rested after doing justice to a substantial luncheon. Mac is a rare entertainer, while eating we listened to a soldiers story of the war with the East Indian mutineers. McCLELLAN served under Sir Collin CAMPBELL, Englands great military chieftain, and is proud of his scars and of the way he obtained them.

Our horses are refreshed and we gently drive over the next 12 miles until we arrive at the residence of Mr. E.S. KEITH, where we were advised to go for comfortable entertainment and rest for the night. Being limited to time and anxious to soon reach the end of our journey we set out next morning at about 8 oclock, and passing on the west side of the great Panoche Valley, viewing the whole country with admiration, we soon arrived at the entrance of a narrow canyon or natural opening in the hill range and after winding in a zigzag direction and crossing the same mountain stream many times we finally emerge into a small valley named Vallecitos

A wild and mountainous region is around us, we gaze on the face of nature on land little cultivated and but thinly inhabited. A few settlers of various tongues live miles apart from each other, tending their flocks and herds on the mountain rangesFrom the presence of fragments of cinnabar which have been washed down the stream and lodged over its bed, we correctly conclude that we are fast approaching the famous quicksilver mines of New Idria. The ascent now becomes more decided and portions of the road will not accommodate more than 1 vehicle at a time, and we find ourselves occasionally following in the rear of large freight teams, heavily laden with merchandise for the mines. We finally pass them and shortly find ourselves mounting the grade to the valuable region above. The works and improvements beyond come suddenly to view like a panorama. The new residence of Capt. MAXWELL is attractive and handsome in its retirement with the varied evergreens covering the rugged hills in the background. The furnaces are to the right of us and beyond nestling on the mountain sides are the cabins of the miners [continued next issue]

**From New Idria --
From the cloudy heights of New Idria we turn our faces homeward, descending the rather steep but excellent grade to the Vallecitos valley. The road has been constructed at great expense and is constantly kept in good condition by the mining companyTo direct our attention to all that is worthy of observation on the route to Panoche would take up too much of our space, so we hurriedly pass by Dr. GREENLEAFs ranch with its new structures and greet Mr. DIXON on his claimAmong the gentlemanly settlers here we met Mr. ASHURST, Mr. BARBEE, and Senor BARJOS. All were busy with the plow

As we approach the eastern end of the valley it narrows down to a canyon with rocky precipitous banks, with intervening broken uneven places covered with manzanito, laurel, juniper and other trees & shrubsAt one spot the strong sulphur exhalations in view of the surroundings bring the vision of Dante before us

Leaving all thoughts of hell with the infernal scene behind us, we next arrive in sight of the Panoche Grande. As we look at this magnificent valley, we are reminded of the statement of Capt. MAXWELL, who informed us that when he passed through the valley accompanied by a guide in 1859, the luxuriant grass was as high from the ground as his horses stirrupsThe valley is oval shaped. It is about 12 miles in length and of variable breadth, viz, from 2 to 5 milesThe soil is generally fertileHay is the staple article raised and always commands a ready sale to the numerous teamsters en route to and from the mines. There is yet some unoccupied government and railroad land open for settlement. Each party here claims a quarter section, and commands in addition, the use of the range in the rear. E.S. KEITH, W. SHAW, Mr. MOORE, McGILVERAY and several other settlers have planted out fruit and shade trees

The permanent population consists of about 30 families and 30 to 40 bachelors, who derive their main support from the growth of sheep and cattleIt is estimated that there are 20,000 sheep on the hills bounding the valleySeveral societies exist and flourish here, among them the Rising Star grange. It embraces over 30 members. Mr. HAGAR is the distinguished master.

The school house is situated a half mile from the post office. It is a comfortable log house of the Missouri type and accommodates all parties. Religious services are held here every Sunday by the Christian and Methodist churches. The meetings are well attended and the moral tone of the community will bear just comparison with that of places nearer civilization. The census represents 105 school children, but they evidently live widely apart. On the day we hailed the tall familiar form of Tom CLAY, there were 105, minus the 100, accompanying him from the school house, but it was an unpropitious day for children to travel from 1 to 50 miles to school. Our loquacious and genial friend, CLAY, appears to be growing reconciled to a pastoral life and his friends up this way need not be surprised to hear of him walking in the footsteps of the patriarchs of old.

MALCOM Bros. store is well located and is under the management of the gentlemanly Mr. MOORE, who is respected for his business capacity and whom we found of service in supplying us with useful information. The post office and home for weary travelers count not be in better hands. Esquire POGUE is an intelligent gentleman and well posted in the history of the settlement. The settlement is comparatively new, few having lived here longer than 5 years. The ranches belonging to Messrs. KEITH, SHAW, MOORE, ROURKE and SPANGLER, are among the best in the valley
