Notes about Bernice Gertrude Visser


Lynden resident, Bernice G. Van Dalen went home to her Heavenly Father on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011. She was 87.

Bernice was born Feb. 8, 1924 in Downs, Kansas to Peter and Martha (Wickers) Visser. At age 9 she moved to Lynden with her family where she attended school through the eighth grade.

On August 7, 1941 Bernice married John Van Dalen and together they raised their family of five children. Outside her home, Bernice worked as a cook; first for Lynden Christian Rest Home in 1963; and later Lynden School District from 1966 until her retirement in 1988. Endeared to her family, she treasured each member.

Bernice loved to knit; making hundreds of afghans for family and friends. As a long-time member of Faith Reformed Church; she sang in the choir and attended Ladies' Bible Study.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, John; son, Alvin; grandson, Monty; great-granddaughter, Abbey Mae Poag; sister, Dorothy Postma; and brothers, Donald and Marty Visser.

Bernice is survived by her children, Bonita "Bonnie" Lyon, of Bellingham, Mick (Jeannie) Van Dalen, of Lynden, John Jr. (Sharon) Van Dalen, of Ferndale, Patricia (Jim) Elsbree, of Port Angeles and daughter-in-law, Barbara Van Dalen of Lynden; 19 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; sister, Henrietta Olin; brothers, Bernie (Ruth) Visser, Harold (Joyce) Visser and George (Gladys) Visser.

Visitation hours are scheduled Friday, Oct. 7, 5 to 8 pm at Gillies Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 8, 1 pm at Monumenta Cemetery followed by a 2 pm memorial service at Faith Reformed Church, 612 Liberty St. in Lynden.

Memorials are suggested to Christian Health Care Center, 855 Aaron Dr., Lynden, WA 98264.
