Notes from Ron Broersma (2/7/2016)
Uncle Pete was related by marriage to the Broersmas already in Makkum. He and uncle Thys were the same age, so probably knew each other by living nearby or going to the same school or church or by family gatherings. Uncle Pete came to the US in 1913 and uncle Thys came the next year, when they were 18 yrs old. They both ended up in Ireton.
So, I think Uncle Pete came to the US in 1913 with his 17 yr old friend Harke Smit from Makkum (seen from the ship manifest), who was joining his 25 year old brother Pier Obe Smit who had immigrated the year before (1912) to Ireton. Uncle Thys followed in 1914 and also went to Ireton. Then grandpa Lawrence Broersma followed in 1920, joining Uncle Thys. They were all from Makkum. Peter, Thys, and Lawrence all married Wichers sisters.
I had no idea growing up that there was that connection between the Vissers and the Broersmas (other than the Wichers sisters).
Uncle Petes dad was killed in a bar fight in 1903 (he had a real temper), leaving his mom a widow for the rest of her life and raising a bunch of kids. Uncle Petes WWI draft card says he was supporting his widowed mother.
While researching Uncle Petes mom, Dieuwke Zijlstra, I found we already had a couple of people by that same name in the database. They were all the same person and had relations to the Broersmas (Jetzes brother Sipke married Dieuwkes sister Christina Zijlstra, and Petes brother Hendriks wifes mom was a Broersma). I merged them all. So I think these families must have known each other from Makkum, Piaam, and Idsegahuizum.
Peter entered the service 7/7/1918, the same day as Thys Broersma.
Kay Broersma read in an obituary that this family came to Lynden in 1937.
