Notes about Louisa Duff Mitchell

Louisa Mitchell Imlah passed away at the home of her daughter, Agnes Jones, near Brooks, Oregon. Both she and her husband were laid to rest in the Fairfield cemetary near Fairfield, Oregon.

Louisa & Alexander, with their minor children, came to the United States in 1871 on a sailing vessel. When nearing the coast of Nova Scotia, the vessel struck a rock and began leaking badly. Rescue vessels took off the women and children who could be persuaded to leave, the men remained aboard to assist in manning the pumps. Louisa elected to stay with her husband, and with her young family, she stayed on the ship which was eventually able to proceed to port and deliver the remaining passengers safely.

The Imlahs came to Oregon and lived along the Willamette Valley. Later Alexander's work took them to Silvertonl, Oregon, and then on to Brooks, Oregon. In the late 1880's the couple purchased a farm which was located on the right bank of the Willamette River, about a mile below Wheatland, from Louisa DeRette. This was their home during the remainder of their lives.
