Notes about Alexander Imlah

This information was provided by Alexander's grandson, Don D. DuRette, January 1957: Alexander Imlah, in later years, was stooped and thin, but it was still evident that in his prime he had possessed a strong and rugged body. In his younger years he was an expert hand-sewer of grain. He had a knack of arranging his feed sack so that he could use both hands for scattering the seed. A man who could walk on soft plowed ground swinging both arms for ten or twelve hous a day, was certainly no weakling. Also, he was noted for the eveness of his spread. there were no streaks of thick or thin grain when the grain came up. In character, though he had all the Scotch sternness and thrift, yet he had a twinkly eyed kindness and a generous spirit, accepting to the full his responsibilities to his family and church. His financial obligations were met and he was faithful in every way to his family. Also, he possessed a fine old country way in his relations with his neighbors and his family. The writer of this brief sketch well remembers his kindly smile when he greeted his grandchildren. I still have a vivid mind picture of him walking down the church aisle ahead of his wife, stopping at the appointed pew, and bowing as she proceeded and seated herself. All in all, Alexander Imlah was a good citizen, a fine Scotch gentleman and an ancestor to be proud of. Alexander Imlah was born at Aberlauer, Scotland December 15, 1836, and he passed away at his home near Fairfield, Oregon on May 17, 1914. We all remember the annual Christmas dinner and family reunion at Grandfathr and Grandmother Imlah's each year before Grandfather's death. Uncles and aunts and cousins by the dozen were present to visit and enjoy the wonderful dinners served. the elders were first served by their wives, the wives then served by their husbands, and finally all the children had the table to themselves, their appetities somewhat dulled by handouts and appropriations from the kitchen beforehand. The couple, with their minor children, came to the United States in 1871. They travelled by sailing vessel which when nearing the coast of Nova Scotia, struck a rock and began leaking badly. Rescue vessels took off the women and children who could be persuaded to leave, the men remaining aboard to assist in manning the pumps. Louisa elected to stay with her husband, and with her young family she stayed on the hsip which was eventually able to proceed to port and deliver her remaining passengers to safety. The Imlahs came on to Oregon and the Willamette Valley, where Alexander found employment on the farm of Colonel James Nesmith in Polk County. Later he worked on the farm of John Porter near Silverton, Oregon after which he operated a farm near Brooks, Oregon. In the late 1880's, the couple purchased a farm which was located on the right bank of the Willamette River, about a mile below Wheatland, from Louisa DeRette. This was their home during the remainder of their lives.
