TJEBBE RAVELING DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS. Remsen Pioneer, Resident Here Half Century, Passed Away Saturday.
After a lingering illness with diabetes, with which he suffered for more than five years and which culminated in a cerebral hemorrhage, Tjebbe Raveling , one of the pioneers of this community, passed away at his home in Remsen Saturday, May 3, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Raveling had been a resident here for almost a half century, having come here in 1881. He is survived by his widow, eight children, two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday.
During the five years of suffering with diabetes Mr. Raveling's condition at times responded favorably to medical treatments, but during the past several months his health declined more rapidly, and his general condition became more weak until march 15 he was suddenly taken down with a severe siege of sickness and after that date was never able to leave his bed. A cerebral hemorrhage, suffered last Saturday, ended his suffering suddenly.
Tjebbe Henry Raveling was born August 3, 1858, in Ostfriesland, Germany, and on May 12, 1881, in the village of Nemarre, was united in marriage to Jennie Renken of that place. Soon after their marriage the couple came to this country and came directly to Remsen and rented a farm south of town. After spending a few years on this place they purchased a farm three miles northeast of town. Mrs. Raveling passed away in 1904, and in 1909 Mr. Raveling mars married to Mrs. Bertha Mohr, of Belle Plaine, Iowa, who survives him. One year later they retired and moved to town, purchasing a comfortable home in the east end, which has been the family home ever since.
To the first union 10 children were born, two of them passing away. The eight living children are: Gerhard Raveling, Ocheydan, Iowa; Henry Raveling, Melvin, Iowa; Sievert Raveling, Granville, Iowa; Anna, now Mrs. John Haack Jr., Remsen; John Raveling, Remsen; Talk Raveling, Elrosa, Minn.; Wiliam Raveling, Remsen, and Minnes, Coon Rapids. There is one step-son, Theo. Mohr, San Francisco, Cal. Surviving also are two sisters and five brothers, who are: Mrs. Peter Tjaden, Remsen; Mrs. Henry Zachte, Lamberton, Minn.; John Raveling, Lucan, Minn.; Jacob Raveling, Elrosa, Minn.; Will Raveling, Lamberton, Minn.; and George and Peter Raveling, Remsen. There are 23 grandchildren.
Tjebbe Raveling, a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, was a staunch member of St. Paul's congregation, and was a man of strict Christian principles, and kindly disposition and splendid character. During his long period of residence here he made hundreds of friends and was a general favorite in their company. In his business dealings he was strictly honest and trustworthy, and in his home circle he was everything that could be expected of a loving father, husband and brother. His passing is a source of keen regret to his many friends, who extend their deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Services were conducted by the Rev. Hugo Welchelt, at the home at 1 o'clock and at St. Paul's church at 1:30. Burial was made in the Remsen cemetery. The large attendance at the last sad rites was a testimonial of the esteem in which the deceased was held among his many friends in the surrounding territory. Pall bearers were John Dallenbach, Wm. Siefke, John Asmussen, Henry Maass, John Sonsma and John Haack Sr. Flower girls were six grand daughters of the deceased-Marian Raveling, Martha Raveling, Esther Raveling, Loretta Raveling, Eunice Tonsfeldt and Frances Tonsfeldt.
